Running & Jogging Index
Weather index for activity planning
What is the Running & Jogging Index?
The Running & Jogging Index is a specialized assessment that determines ideal weather conditions for running and jogging, considering multiple factors that directly impact runner performance, safety, and comfort. This index analyzes air temperature (with ideal range between 10-20°C for best performance), relative humidity (which affects the body's ability to cool through perspiration), precipitation (which can make surfaces slippery and reduce visibility), and air quality (crucial for respiratory health during intense exercise). Ideal conditions allow runners to maintain consistent pace, adequate hydration, and comfortable breathing, while adverse conditions may require significant training adjustments, including reduced intensity, schedule changes, or even session cancellation to avoid health risks.
How is the Running & Jogging Index calculated?
- Temperature: Temperatures between 10-20°C (50-68°F) are ideal and increase the index, allowing better performance and comfort. Temperatures below 5°C (41°F) or above 25°C (77°F) reduce the index due to thermal discomfort and risk of hypothermia or hyperthermia.
- Humidity: Low to moderate humidity (30-60%) is ideal and increases the index, allowing efficient sweat evaporation. High humidity (above 70%) reduces the index, as it prevents body cooling and increases risk of overheating.
- Precipitation: Light rain may be acceptable, but moderate to heavy rain reduces the index, making surfaces slippery, reducing visibility, and increasing accident risk. Dry conditions score highest.
- Air quality: Clean air (high AQI, above 7) increases the index, allowing comfortable breathing during intense exercise. Polluted air (low AQI, below 5) reduces the index and can cause respiratory problems.
