About Zao
Zao Onsen, in the Tohoku region of Yamagata, is one of Japan's oldest and most famous ski resorts, celebrated for its "snow monsters" - juhyo, the frost-covered trees that crowd the upper slopes - and its sulphur hot springs. Rising from the onsen village at about 780 m to around 1660 m, it is reached by an aerial ropeway and offers a sprawling network of courses, from the gentle Paradise and Utopia slopes to the legendary Yokokura Wall, one of Japan's steepest pitches. With night-lit snow monsters, ski schools, rentals, restaurants and historic baths, it combines spectacular scenery with deep northern snow.
