Fishing Conditions Index

Weather index for activity planning

What is the Fishing Conditions Index?

The Fishing Conditions Index is based on empirical knowledge accumulated by anglers over generations and validated by scientific research on fish behavior in relation to weather conditions. This index considers barometric pressure and its trend (fish are sensitive to pressure changes, with activity often increasing before pressure drops associated with weather systems), wind speed and direction (which affects water currents, surface temperature, and fish behavior), cloud cover (which influences the amount of light penetrating the water and feeding behavior), and precipitation (which can alter water temperature, turbidity, and food availability). Ideal conditions generally include stable or slowly falling pressure, moderate winds, partly cloudy skies, and adequate water temperature, creating the perfect environment for fish to be more active and receptive to bait.

How is the Fishing Conditions Index calculated?

  • Barometric pressure: Stable pressure (1013-1020 hPa) or slowly falling pressure increases the index, as fish are more active. Very high pressure (above 1025 hPa) or very low pressure (below 1000 hPa) may reduce fish activity.
  • Pressure trend: Slow pressure drops (1-3 hPa over several hours) increase the index, as they often precede weather systems and increase fish feeding activity. Rapid drops may indicate storms and reduce the index.
  • Wind speed: Moderate winds (10-20 km/h or 6-12 mph) increase the index, creating water movement that attracts fish. Very strong winds (above 30 km/h or 18 mph) reduce the index, making fishing difficult and dangerous.
  • Cloud cover: Partly cloudy skies (30-70% coverage) increase the index, as they reduce glare on water and make fish more active. Completely clear or completely overcast skies may slightly reduce the index.
  • Precipitation: Light rain may increase the index, as it adds oxygen to water and food. Heavy rain reduces the index, altering water temperature, increasing turbidity, and making fishing difficult.
