Pet Walking Index

Weather index for activity planning

What is the Pet Walking Index?

The Pet Walking Index is an essential tool for responsible pet owners who want to ensure the well-being and safety of their companions during walks and outdoor activities. This index carefully evaluates air temperature and feels-like temperature (considering factors such as humidity and wind that affect how animals perceive heat), precipitation (which can cause discomfort and hypothermia, especially in short-haired animals), and wind speed (which can increase thermal discomfort). Pets, especially dogs, are more vulnerable to temperature extremes than humans, with increased risk of heatstroke on hot days and hypothermia on cold days. High values indicate safe and comfortable conditions for extended walks, while low values suggest the need for short walks, additional protection, or postponement of outdoor activities.

How is the Pet Walking Index calculated?

  • Air temperature: Temperatures between 15-25°C (59-77°F) are ideal and increase the index. Temperatures below 5°C (41°F) or above 30°C (86°F) significantly reduce the index, as pets are more vulnerable to temperature extremes than humans, with risk of hypothermia or heatstroke.
  • Feels-like temperature: Considers humidity and wind that affect how animals perceive heat. High humidity with heat increases the feels-like temperature and reduces the index, increasing risk of heatstroke. Cold wind reduces the feels-like temperature and also reduces the index.
  • Precipitation: Rain or snow reduce the index, causing discomfort and risk of hypothermia, especially in short-haired animals. Dry conditions score highest and are safer for walks.
  • Wind speed: Light winds (up to 15 km/h or 9 mph) are acceptable. Strong winds (above 25 km/h or 15 mph) reduce the index, increasing thermal discomfort and making walks unpleasant, especially for small animals.
