Cold & Flu Risk

Weather index for activity planning

What is the Cold & Flu Risk?

The Cold & Flu Risk Index is a research-based tool that estimates the likelihood of spread and transmission of common respiratory viruses (such as rhinovirus, influenza, and coronavirus) based on specific weather conditions. Studies demonstrate that certain climate conditions - such as low temperatures, low relative humidity, sudden temperature changes, and variations in atmospheric pressure - can create more favorable environments for the survival and transmission of respiratory viruses, in addition to affecting the body's immune response. This index helps identify periods of higher risk when additional preventive measures (such as enhanced hygiene, social distancing, and mask use) may be especially beneficial. It is important to note that this index does not substitute for professional medical advice and should be used as a complementary prevention tool.

How is the Cold & Flu Risk calculated?

  • Air temperature: Low temperatures (below 10°C or 50°F) increase the risk index, as respiratory viruses survive better and the immune system may be compromised. Moderate temperatures (15-25°C or 59-77°F) reduce the risk.
  • Relative humidity: Low humidity (below 40%) increases the index, as dry air facilitates virus transmission and dries airways. Moderate humidity (40-60%) is ideal and reduces the risk.
  • Sudden temperature changes: Rapid temperature variations (more than 10°C or 18°F in a few hours) increase the index, as they stress the immune system and make the body more susceptible to infections.
  • Atmospheric pressure: Rapid pressure drops (associated with weather systems) slightly increase the index, as they can affect respiratory function and overall well-being.
